MASADA Hanan Eshel
Ein Gedi is the largest oasis off the western shore of the
Dead Sea. Within the oasis there are four springs which together supply 3
million cubic meters of water annually. The location, high temperatures, and
abundance of water produce a large variety of plant and animal life, some of
which are quite rare. |

MASADA Hanan Eshel
The bulk of construction at Masada, of which one sees today,
was carried out by King Herod who ruled from 37 to 4 bce. Barely two
generations later, in 73 or 74 ce, Flavius Silva, provincial governor of
Judea and the commander of the enth Roman Legion, attacked and destroyed
most of the structures on Masada. What the Romans did not demolish was razed
by the defenders themselves towards the end of the Roman siege. |

QUMRAN Hanan Eshel “The Dead Sea Scrolls are undoubtedly the most important discovery found in Israel in the field of the Bible and history of Judaism and Christianity.” Fragments of about nine hundred different scrolls from the Second Temple period were discovered in eleven caves at Qumran between 1947 and 1956. The first scrolls from Qumran were found in 1947 by two Bedouin shepherds of the Ta’amireh tribe. The core area of the Qumran settlement site has been preserved and adjacent to it is the visitors’ center for the Qumran National Park. The members of the Yahad community, today known as the Qumran sect, were Jews who left Jerusalem and went to live in Qumran on the western shore of the Dead Sea. They developed a unique philosophy and a strict life regiment. |
